What Is MagSafe and How Does It Work? A Plain-English Guide

MagSafe is the ring of magnets built into every iPhone since the iPhone 12. It does two jobs: it snaps accessories onto the back of your phone in exactly the right spot, and it lines up wireless charging perfectly so you get full speed every time.

Where it came from

Apple originally used the MagSafe name for laptop chargers that detached safely when you tripped over the cable. In 2020 the name came back for something different: a circle of magnets around the iPhone's wireless charging coil, plus a small sensor that lets the phone recognise what's attached.

What the magnets actually do

• Alignment. Wireless charging only works well when the coils line up. MagSafe pulls the charger into the exact centre — no more waking up to a phone that missed the pad.
• Attachment. The same ring holds wallets, stands, grips, car mounts and battery packs against the phone through everyday movement.

Which iPhones have it

Every iPhone from the 12 onward: 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 series, including the iPhone Air and 17e. If your phone is older than the iPhone 12, it has wireless charging but no magnet ring — magnetic accessories will feel loose without a special case.

"MagSafe-compatible" vs "MagSafe"

Officially certified MagSafe accessories go through Apple's programme. "MagSafe-compatible" means the accessory uses a magnet ring in the same position and strength range — it snaps and aligns the same way, without the certification paperwork. For wallets, stands and mounts, compatibility is what matters: the magnet either holds or it doesn't. For chargers, certification affects maximum charging speed.

What to check before buying any magnetic accessory

• A full ring array, not a single magnet. One magnet holds a wallet on a desk; a ring holds it in a jeans pocket. Full explanation here.
