Short answer: no — not the cards you carry today. Modern credit and debit cards store your account data on an EMV chip and an NFC antenna, and neither of those is magnetic. A phone wallet magnet can sit against them for years without erasing anything.

Why people worry about this
The fear is a holdover from the magnetic stripe era. The black stripe on the back of older cards stores data in magnetically aligned particles, and a strong enough magnet really can scramble it. That was a genuine problem in the 1990s, when the stripe was the only way to pay. Hotel key cards — which are still often magstripe-only — are where most people have actually experienced this.
What's actually in your card now
Every card issued in the last decade carries:
- An EMV chip — a tiny computer. It stores data electrically, not magnetically. Magnets do nothing to it.
- An NFC antenna — the coil that makes tap-to-pay work. It's a passive copper loop. A static magnet doesn't erase or degrade it.
- A magnetic stripe (often still present as a fallback) — this is magnetically encoded, and this is the only part with any theoretical risk.
So when someone says "magnets killed my card," they're almost always describing a magstripe problem — and in practice, cards fail far more often from being scratched, bent, or demagnetized by wear than by a phone accessory.
How strong is a MagSafe magnet, really?
MagSafe-style magnet arrays are engineered to hold roughly 1–2 pounds of phone against gravity. That's meaningfully weaker than the fridge-magnet-strength fears people imagine, and dramatically weaker than the industrial magnets used to deliberately erase magnetic media.

If a key card stops working after a day in your pocket, a magnet is a plausible culprit.
