Wallet vs Stand vs Grip: Which Magnetic iPhone Accessory Fits Your Day?
Share
There are three things most people put on the back of a magnetic iPhone: a wallet, a wallet that also stands, or a grip that also stands. They overlap, which is why the choice feels hard. The honest way to pick is not to compare features but to describe your day. Where does the phone spend its hours: in a pocket being tapped at counters, on a desk during calls, or in one hand while you're walking, commuting and juggling things? Each of those has a clear answer. This guide walks through all three, then the combinations that make sense and the ones that don't.
Everything here assumes an iPhone 12 or later, or any phone in a case with the magnet ring built in. If you're not sure your case qualifies, run the 60-second compatibility check first.
The three, in one line each
- Wallet (Snap, CA$14.99): a slim card pocket. It does one job, carrying one to three cards on the phone, and nothing else.
- Wallet-stand (Stand, CA$34.99): a card holder that folds out into a kickstand, portrait or landscape. Cards plus a stand, at the cost of a little more thickness.
- Grip-stand (Grip, CA$27.99): a thin aluminium ring you put a finger through, which also props the phone up. No cards at all.
Pick by your day
"My phone is mostly in a pocket and I tap to pay." → Wallet
If the main reason you want something on the phone is to stop carrying a separate wallet, the plain wallet is the right call, and the cheapest. It's the flattest of the three, which matters in a front pocket, and it has no moving parts to think about. The trade-off is that it does nothing for you at a desk. You'll still prop your phone against a mug.
Capacity honesty: Snap holds one to three cards. Three is snug; two is comfortable. We wrote a whole piece on how many cards actually fit, and it applies to the Stand too. If your carry is licence, debit and one credit card, you're fine. If you carry six loyalty cards, none of these products is for you.
"I'm on video calls or watching things at a desk, and I still want my cards." → Wallet-stand
The Stand exists for the person who liked the idea of a wallet but kept wishing it did something at the desk. Folded, it's a card holder. Unfolded, it holds the phone at a viewing angle in landscape for video, or in portrait for a call. Then it folds flat and goes back in the pocket.
What you give up: it's thicker than a plain wallet, because there's a hinge and a second panel in there. It's PU, not leather, and we say that plainly. And a wallet-stand is not a full wallet, same as the Snap: a few cards, no cash, no coins.
The 2-for-59.99 option is aimed at households with two magnetic phones, not at one person; you don't need two.
"I'm on the move, one-handed, and I keep nearly dropping it." → Grip
If your problem is holding the phone, not carrying cards, the Grip is the answer. A finger through the loop means your thumb reaches the far corner of a big screen and the phone stays put while you're on a bus, walking a dog, or carrying a coffee. Flip the ring out and it's a stand in either orientation.
The Grip is aluminium and thin, and because it's magnetic rather than glued, it comes off in a second when you want the back of the phone clean, or when the phone goes on a wireless charger. Older stick-on rings can't do that. What it doesn't do: carry anything. If you also want cards on the phone, keep reading.

Can you run two?
Not at the same time on the same phone; they all occupy the same spot. But two accessories for two modes is a real setup, and it's cheaper than it sounds because they swap in a second.
- Snap + Grip: wallet on for the day, Grip on for the commute or the gym. This is the pairing for people who mostly carry cards but have a specific one-handed hour.
- Stand alone: if you want cards and a stand, the Stand covers both and you don't need a second accessory. Don't buy a Snap as well.
- Stand + Grip: only if the one-hand hold is essential to you. Most people who buy the Stand don't miss a grip.
If you want an actual case in the mix, the Clear magnetic case has the ring built in and works with all three. A case with its own detachable wallet, the Duo, is the alternative if you'd rather the wallet and case were one purchase; the detachable-vs-built-in question is covered in magnetic wallet vs wallet case.
Things that should talk you out of all three
We'd rather lose the sale than have the product come back.
- You carry cash or coins daily. None of these hold either.
- Your case fails the magnet test and you don't want to change it. Consider the Loop strap instead; paired with the Tether patch, it clips onto any case and doesn't need magnets at all.
- You want protection. These accessories add nothing to drop protection and we don't claim they do.
- You want something that holds a specific weight or survives a specific test. We don't publish those numbers because we haven't measured them in a way we'd stand behind.
FAQ
Which one is the most popular?
We're a small Canadian store and we're not going to invent a bestseller. The Stand is the one we'd point most people to, because it covers two jobs. The Snap is the one to start with if you're unsure a magnetic wallet suits you at all; this piece helps with that.
Will the wallet or stand affect wireless charging?
All three sit over the charging coil, so you take them off to charge wirelessly. That's a two-second snap either way. Wired charging is unaffected.
Do they work with a case?
With a case that has the magnet ring built in, yes; that ring is what it's for. With a thin non-magnetic case, sometimes, weakly. With a thick or metal-backed case, no. Details in Can you use a magnetic wallet with a case?
Is the Stand's material leather?
No. It's PU, a synthetic. It looks like leather and we chose it for weight and cost; we don't describe it as leather anywhere.
What ships free?
Anything over CA$24 in Canada, which covers the Stand, the Grip, the Loop and the Snap 2-pack. See the full range in MagSafe-compatible accessories and the best sellers collection.
