Can You Use a MagSafe Wallet With a Case? Yes — Here's the Catch

Yes — a MagSafe wallet works through a case, as long as the case passes the magnet through. Whether yours does comes down to three things: what the case is made of, how thick it is, and whether it has its own magnet ring.

The three case types

• MagSafe-compatible cases (best). These have their own magnet ring built in, positioned to line up with the phone's. The wallet attaches to the case's ring at close to full strength. This is the setup we recommend — it's why our magnetic cases carry a full ring array.
• Thin cases without magnets (workable). A slim, non-metal case under ~2mm lets the phone's own magnets reach through at reduced strength. Fine on a desk; test before trusting it in a pocket.
• Thick, rugged or metal cases (no). Distance kills magnetic force fast, and any metal plate or ring for old-style car mounts blocks the field entirely.

The 10-second test

Attach the wallet, load it with two cards, hold the phone screen-up, and shake it firmly. Then slide it in and out of a tight jeans pocket twice. If the wallet survives both, your case passes. If it slides or twists, don't trust it with your ID.

Why hold strength varies so much

Magnet force drops steeply with distance. The difference between a 1.5mm case and a 3mm case can be more than half the holding force. This is why the same wallet feels rock-solid on one phone and loose on another — it's almost never the wallet, it's what's between the magnets.
